Press Release/Position Statement
-From the desk of the Candidate-
Thursday, January 3, 2008
11th District Congressional Candidate Carl
Mumpower has raised concerns with the relationship between Tennessee Senator
Lamar Alexander and North Carolina Representative Heath Shuler. On December 20th, Alexander and
Shuler announced their collaboration in securing a 6 million dollar earmark as
a down payment on the 52 million dollar North Shore Road settlement plan.
Mumpower, a Republican, has contested
the appropriateness of Alexander’s long standing interest in “influencing the
affairs of North Carolina”. “The buyout
plan represents a surrender document that gives pennies on the dollar in lieu
of a real road and supports a Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge monopoly on tourism in
the Smokey Mountain National Park”, said Mumpower. “This is simply good old boy power politics
masquerading as something more virtuous”, challenged Mumpower. “These gentlemen are getting a free pass on an
outcome that has Tennessee stamped
all over it.”
“Swain County has been orchestrated into a giant Federal
reservation”, said Mumpower. “Senator
Alexander and Representative Shuler are insuring that the North Shore Road promise
and the broader economic potentials of Smokey Mountain National Park tourism are
smothered – that’s not a gift that should be applauded regardless of how charmingly
it is wrapped.”
