Press Release/Position Statement
-From the desk of the Candidate-
Thursday, December 20, 2007
Congressman Heath Shuler (NC 11-Dem) was on the losing side of yesterday’s
decisive 352-64 vote to stop the alternative minimum tax (AMT) from kicking in
for 400,000 NC citizens. Citing his
commitment to support “pay as you go” policies passed by Congress earlier in
the year, Shuler sided with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in supporting the
additional taxation with a no vote.
“Paying as you go would be a principled position I would applaud”,
shared 11th District Republican challenger Carl Mumpower, “If Mr. Shuler and
congress were remotely consistent at applying that principle.” “Unfortunately, he has a solid record of supporting
hidden pork earmarks and no record of reducing government’s attacks on our
pocket book.”
“I’m sorry, but actions speak louder than words,” said Mumpower. “At the same time Shuler is voting with
Speaker Pelosi to raise taxes in Washington, back home he’s getting a free pass
from some of the media who allow him to play with the truth on his voting
record.”
“There is an old Cherokee tale about a man who, when asked which of the
good and evil dog spirits residing in him was winning, responded by saying, “The
one I feed the most.” “In this case we
have a “blue dog” and a “lap dog” – Congressman Shuler’s real voting record tells
us which one is winning”, said Mumpower
