Press Release
-From the desk of the Candidate-
For many viewers, the Sunday night Republican debate on the
Spanish-language network, Univision, was an unprecedented moment in American
politics. With a viewership estimated at
10% of the 45,000,000 Spanish speaking people in America, at stake was a
Republican counter to a September Democrat debate some say was specifically
targeted to cementing Hispanic loyalties.
Absent from the debate was Colorado Representative and Presidential
Candidate Tom Tancredo. Citing a
resistance to “further Balkanization of American political life”, the
Congressman elected not to participate in a political forum he viewed as
“insulting to our new citizens”. “It is not a good idea to encourage people to
think they can participate in American politics without knowing how to
understand and speak English,” said Tancredo.
“Doing so offends not only citizens old and new; it offends the spirit
of democracy.”
11th District Republican
Congressional candidate Carl Mumpower echoed Tancredo’s concerns and applauded
his courage in taking a position of principle over politics. "Like
many folks, I'm sick and tired of the way in which politicians of both parties
so easily abandon their principles and pander for votes. The Democrats,
especially, continue to play to their “pet constituencies” – while ignoring the
concerns of the average American – by seducing them with false promises that
cannot be kept," offered Mumpower. "That does a grave disservice to
the very people that politicians claim to help. I am a proponent of making
English our official language because I sincerely believe it would ennoble
people. It would help to broaden the equal access to liberty and opportunity
that makes this country special – and it would help people of all
backgrounds to more fully share in the American dream," said
Mumpower.
