Editorial Submission/Position
Statement
The new century has witnessed an extraordinary erosion of America’s
political credibility on the international stage. Some of the damage is self-inflicted – some comes
from the self-serving enjoying distraction from their own failures.
Being low on opinion polls is uncomfortable – when combined with a
matching erosion of economic credibility, it is potentially catastrophic.
Historically, America has stood above the pack as a world haven for
investment through trusted standards of business. That sense of safety has supported the dollar
and grounded America’s high standard of living. Ethical and competency failures by our
leaders and the business community have pushed trust into the shadows.
America today offers a perfect storm of dysfunctional monetary policies,
indifference to the rule of law, and power politics that speak more to the
gerrymandering of a rigged lottery than system integrity supporting our
future. In one short year, we have seen
our private and public financial institutions go from a cloak of propriety to
full frontal nudity in a sub-prime loan swindle that is so huge that an
invested world cannot help but tremble.
Talking heads that were once giants of the financial markets are now
reaching for the straps of their zillion dollar parachutes.
With a national, business, and personal debt measured in trillions,
America is realistically mortgaging our future to the foreign countries funding
our largesse. Whereas it is true that
they are bonded to us until all our feathers are plucked, the equation has been
tilted by the loss of trust in an American economy floating like a leaky boat. Even rats will jump into the perils of the
unknown to escape a sinking ship.
In the coming months we can anticipate a cry from both sides of the
political spectrum on how a bailout is crucial for those who have created the sub-prime
market folly. A countering cry of
resistance is crucial from the rest of us who are weary of the game and
unwilling to continue funding bad policy and greed. Without consequence, there will be no
change.
Our silence will insure that America’s future is stamped “Made in China”.
