Media Release/Position
Statement
Congressman Health Shuler (D-Swain)
frequently touts his conservative credentials as a “Blue Dog Democrat upholding
Western North Carolina values”. A careful review of his actual voting record
in Washington reveal patterns more in keeping with liberal traditions. Statistically, Shuler sides with his Democrat
colleagues 83% of the time. His record
on resisting earmarks puts him in the top tier of Social Democrats who support “pork
barrel spending” as good business for their constituents. Shuler has voted against all of the 50
anti-pork amendments proposed this year – only one of which passed under the
Democrat majority.
11th District Congressional
Candidate Carl Mumpower (R-Buncombe) has pointed to Democrat’s pledge before
the last election to cut pork spending in half.
“This Democrat controlled Congress is on track to match the excesses of
2005 when the Republicans were in control,” said Mumpower. “Both sides deserve rebuke, but the Democrats
have boldly betrayed the promises that grounded their sweeping victory of 2006.” “Our 11th District Congressional
representative says one thing at home, but his actions in Washington
consistently support hidden earmarks and wasteful spending.”
“There may be an overwhelming need for a
tattoo removal program in California; a quarter of a million dollars for
infrastructure upgrades to the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in NY;
and a quail trail in Alabama, but these tax funded handouts seem more about
publicity and campaigning than the business of the people”, said Mumpower. “I
have spent six years resisting pork spending in Asheville – I will not change
my course in Washington.” “Those who are
anxious to see Western North Carolina line up for Federal handouts might better
invest their vote in someone other than me – my mission will be to stop
Washington from taking our money, not enroll us in their community welfare
program.”
