Statement
Washington
Lawmakers headed home Friday for a two week Thanksgiving recess without passing
any of the major bills they were slated for resolution before the break. 11th District Congressional
Candidate Carl Mumpower (R-Buncombe) noted the recess as “a holiday from
responsibility”.
Funding
for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan Veteran’s benefits were sidestepped as
Democrats under House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pressed to tie additional resources
to legislated troop withdrawals. Senate
Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Pelosi have repeatedly said that if Congress
cannot pass legislation that ties war money to troop withdrawals, they will not
send President Bush a bill this year.
“Politicians
on both sides of the isle have been talking out of both sides of their mouth in
supporting our combat troops – now we have a chance to see who is real and who
is not.”, shared Mumpower. “It is silly
to believe you can support men and women in harm’s way by ridiculing the action
to which they are committed.” “It is
folly to like war, but the greater insanity is to be in one and fight it with
half a heart and an empty wallet.”
