In follow-up to a controversial challenge of the Cherokee tribal status as a “corrupted special interest”, candidate for the 11th District Congressional seat, Carl Mumpower, has targeted the authentic sovereignty of the Cherokee Nation. “I’m hard pressed to understand how Cherokee can have sovereign status and yet receive special tax benefits, what is evidently a generous foreign aid package, and a gambling license and still have the right to vote and lobby in the U.S.” “I leave it to others to find ways to justify segregation as a healthy model for any people in twenty-first century America, but the greatest travesty perpetuated on the American Indian has been the reservation system. When questioned on accusations of racist motives, Mumpower noted, “The “R” word is used to censor meaningful dialog on a host of important issues – the biggest racists are those who use old harms to make minorities permanent victims.” In an October 21st Asheville Citizen-Times editorial, Mumpower was labeled as “grossly ignorant” for his lack of understanding of the history of “Native American sovereignty”. “I have a Google button too, but this argument is less about heritage and sovereign status than dubious arrangements assuring the American Indian remains segregated from America.” “A brief recital of the pledge of allegiance will highlight the curiosity of the C-T editorial board’s defense of the Qualla Boundary from a conservative congressional candidate while simultaneously ignoring a flood of illegal immigrants violating America’s borders.”
