Democrats failed on Thursday to gain the votes necessary to overturn the President’s veto of SCHIP child health insurance expansion legislation. Speaker Pelosi and Democrat members of Congress used the opportunity to highlight Republican indifference to child health care issues and society’s need for broader health care access. Congressman Shuler of the 11^th District echoed the sentiments of Speaker Pelosi in stating, “I do not believe that access to health care should be a privilege reserved for the wealthy. Our Nation currently has over 9 million children living without the basic health care coverage they need to grow up healthy. That is unacceptable to me.” 11^th District Congressional Candidate Carl Mumpower expressed satisfaction at the outcome of the vote. “It is important to note that this was an expansion of the existing program and another end run by Congress to avoid the deeper responsibility of fixing health care coverage problems for all Americans.” “The devil is in the details, and this bill was loaded with pork that assured a growing debt burden for the children and grandchildren it purports to protect.” “Sidestepping tax credits and other means to keeping Americans in control of their own health care, Democrats continue efforts to make our citizenry dependent on big government”, shared Mumpower. “Hiding socialist agendas behind a mask of nobility is what my Grandfather once called, “Turning chicken manure into chicken salad.”
