In my opinion, Carl, you are simply pandering to
the Republicans or any others who have this as an agenda. Its a more
complicated picture than you make it out to be and actions such as you suggest
would have more of an impact that you can envision at this time.
Since your so gung-ho on this, what do you know
about how many Hispanics are in Asheville? What about the 11th district?
How many are thought to be illegal? What of the effects on the children
associated with these families as these children, having been born in the
States, are Americans? What businesses particularly in West Asheville, would
be affected by such a strategy as you propose?
"....With the departure of so many people,
the local economy suffered. Hair salons, restaurants and corner shops that
catered to the immigrants saw business plummet; several closed. Once-boarded-up
storefronts downtown were boarded up again.
Meanwhile, the town was hit with two lawsuits
challenging the law. Legal bills began to pile up, straining the towns already
tight budget. Suddenly, many people – including some who originally favored the
law – started having second thoughts...."

Marsha,
Thank you for the
challenge. If I were pandering, I would certainly not pick this
issue. The groundswell of support you assume does not exist.
Illegal immigrants
currently do 25% of the "jobs no one else wants to do". This
artificially created cheap labor pool is supported by Democrats seeking
new mascots and Republicans willing to side step our free market economy.
One of the results are artificially suppressed wages that give the rest of us
cheap chicken but assure that a decent wage eludes many underprivileged
people. A supply and demand system adjusts naturally if yo!
u let it
- we
should be paying more for our McDonald's burgers so that they can find people
to hire and the people they do hire can support themselves.
I do not uphold people
who are here to use America, whether they are illegal aliens or those who
illegally employ them. The house will not fall down if we have to
adjust. Wages will go up, costs will go up on some things, and a
underclass in America, like previous generations, will have an authentic chance
to get to a higher place without having their dignity robbed through the hollow
promise of government handouts.
