NC 11th District Republican Congressional candidate and Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower is a determined opponent of illegal immigration with a persistent message - progress must begin at the local level. His latest effort in follow-up to the Mills Manufacturing ICE raid has been to start a program called 'Operation Illumination' with the intention of shining a light on those who may be employing illegal aliens.
Mumpower places the greatest blame for illegal immigration on corrupt governments that export people and a U.S. government that does not properly enforce its borders. Mumpower also has strong criticism for employers who help fund the migration. "If the jobs and money were not available, these easily exploitable people would not be leaving their home countries and coming to Western North Carolina illegally," says Mumpower.
"We talked with people in Leicester community today about two different farms respectively employing 50 and 10 non-English speaking people," says Mumpower. "One farm reportedly has three mobile homes with 14-20 people living in each and working for subsistence wages. I also understand that one group is working tomatoes and the other tobacco. I have no idea as to whether this information is correct. I do have details and will be contacting ICE immediately. One of the callers was frustrated with the issue of 'illegals taking our jobs', but also expressed concern with a wealthy man taking advantage of his workers."
"No matter the justifications folks find for misusing illegal aliens, this is a bad deal all the way around," said Mumpower. "Anyone who helps flood America with an underclass labor pool; side steps the rule of law; burdens our hospitals, schools, social services, and the tax payers who pay the bills; and otherwise enables illegal immigration is crying for some attention. Most of the authorities are paralyzed or complacent, with other people's help we are going to step around the nonsense and at least make an effort to turn on the lights."
