More Fallout for Illegals Thanks to ICE Raid E-mail

August 21, 2008

The impact of the recent ICE raid at Mills Manufacturing continues to ripple through Western North Carolina.  Arvato's (formerly Sonopress) Buncombe County plant initially fired 60 employees who left the job site the day of the raid.  Sources inside the company report that an additional 60 people who failed a credential check have also been fired.

Assuming that the positions held by those in the country illegally were necessary to each company's function, the latest firings represent approximately 180 new jobs for U.S. citizens in WNC.  Both companies have indicated they are hiring and have encouraged those who can demonstrate legal status to apply.  Each has confirmed the use of the federal government's E-Verify system for new hires.

NC 11th District Republican Congressional Candidate Carl Mumpower helped trigger ICE action against Mills and indicates he will continue to press for action with other employers in WNC.  "Those who employee illegal immigrants are abusing their competitors, encouraging folks to leave their home country, and passing on the costs of social services, crime, and education to tax payers.  That is wrong, and I will continue to take the heat for illuminating those who fund or enable the harms of illegal immigration."

Mumpower had positive things to share about Arvato's follow-up to earlier terminations of illegal employees.  "This latest action says that this company is getting serious about having legal employees and quickly becoming a model for doing the right thing," said Mumpower.   I continue to hear handwringing from other employers who claim Americans won't work or that they are dependent on illegal labor.  My comment to these folks is if you can't afford to pay US citizens US wages, then you need to rethink your business model or ask yourself if your company is obsolete.  If the latter is the case, please move to third world country south of the border and try to uplift those folks.  Don't try to hold on to the benefits of America while importing your labor pool at the expense of the rest of us."
