Tuesday's ICE arrest of 57 at Mills Manufacturing Company has brought reaction from at least one WNC politician who applauds the action. 11th District Congressional candidate hopes the unprecedented illegal immigration enforcement initiative sends ripples throughout the community. "Illegal immigration is the greatest law breaking scheme in America's history - supported by both political parties, our churches, employers, and a host of other self-serving groups that benefit from our indifference to the sanctity of America's border and our laws."
In a Tuesday morning communication between Asheville staff and the City Councilman, Mumpower noted that he had been earlier contacted by an employee at Mills Manufacturing and had created a connection with ICE agents in Charlotte. "I am grateful that a person had the courage to step forward and that ICE took action," said Mumpower.
"I had initiated complaints about a host of other companies in WNC, including Sonopress in Weaverville, Van Wingerdon Nursery in Henderson County, and Asheville City and Buncombe County government projects in Asheville, noted Mumpower." "In the end, the fact that Mills was a government contracting agency made them a stronger target. I remember wearing a parachute in Vietnam made by Mills Manufacturing - it was a comfort back then - but it is sad to see how far things have drifted since that time. Having a third of your work force arrested for illegal immigration violations makes a strong statement."
When asked how he felt about the disruptions to the families of the arrested, Mumpower expressed concern, "Of course I feel sorry for all of those involved." "Just like I feel sorry for drug dealers, Wall Street insider traders, prostitutes, politicians who betray their oath of office, and others who become victims of their own bad decisions. I am not, however, willing to join those who place enabling and appeasement practices before the law and personal accountability."
Mumpower indicates that he intends to continue hammering on the harms of illegal immigration going forward. "Thirty percent of our children are physically dropping out of school while even more mentally quit before they have the skills to compete in a tough world," said Mumpower. "For minorities things are even worse, but the business community and the rest of us do little more than wring our hands because we do not need those children - our porous borders are giving us a ready pool of illegal labor that works hard for low wages. I am sorry, but will not save the world or secure our future by destroying our own children. Mills Manufacturing and other companies are free to move to Mexico - they are not free to move Mexico here."
