So far Representative Heath Shuler has dodged every 11th District invitation to debate challenger Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower.  Sources inside Shuler's campaign have reported that it is the incumbent's intention to, "bring in celebrities to distract voters, buy lots of TV, and avoid contact with his opponent as much as possible".  "If I had Heath Shuler's voting record, I would want to avoid public scrutiny too," said Mumpower.

The Republican challenger has expressed an interest in holding a debate in all of WNC's fifteen counties.  "When he ran against Charles Taylor, Shuler was a big fan of debates - now that he is office, winning has become more important than informing the voters," said Mumpower.  "Per his part in a 213 to 212 vote to recess Congress, I wonder if Heath can fit me in during his five week vacation?   Nancy Pelosi has told her 'Blue Dog - Lap Dogs' they can change directions and vote for drilling now if it will help them get elected.   If Nancy's OK with it, I would like to challenge Heath to an early debate while he is down here and the business of Congress is waiting up there."
