Mumpower Wins Chamber Business Poll |

August 7, 2008
In the view of those who participated in a recent Henderson County Chamber of Commerce web poll, Carl Mumpower may be the better choice in the 11th District race. The Chamber poll asked the question, "Which US Congressional candidate will best represent business interests in Western North Carolina?" Poll results were 44% in favor of Mumpower, 24% in favor of Shuler, and 32% for neither.
"I appreciate the support of the business community in Henderson County," said Mumpower. "The results were particularly surprising in that the poll began right after the Henderson County Republican Party leadership publically disavowed my campaign. I've also hammered some of this community's businesses for flagrant use of illegal aliens. We will continue to run by putting principles first over appealing to people's selfish interests - an approach that evidently resonates with many of the good folks of Henderson County."
Mumpower is running as an 'Independent Republican' with a consistent conservative voting record. Incumbent Democrat Heath Shuler bills himself as a 'Blue Dog' conservative, although his voting record is generally viewed as moderate. The Washington Post reports that in the 110th Congress, Shuler has voted with his Democrat colleagues 86.4% of the time.
One recent survey may validate the Henderson County Chamber's poll results. According to many national issue surveys, the state of the economy is the number one concern for most Americans. The Club for Growth, a national policy body with a primary focus on economic growth issues, tracks the pro-economic growth votes of leaders in the House and Senate. Per their calculations, Shuler votes against economic growth 98% of the time - a record more anti-growth than that of his liberal colleagues in Congress - including John Murtha, Charles Rangel and Dennis Kucinich.
