Republican losses in Congress this year have the potential to be catastrophic. At least in the view of the Evans-Novak Political Report - a newsletter frequented by contributor Robert Novak, a long time political pundit recently diagnosed with cancer. "The seven-charge indictment of Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), highlights two themes of this year: Republican losses in Congress will range from bad to catastrophic, and the anti-reform wing of the GOP seems to be steeped in corruption. The good news for Democrats is that the indictment could lead to another Senate seat pickup. The good news for conservatives is that the continued march into scandal or even into jail of pro-pork, old-school GOP lawmakers could help the conservative reform wing of the party."
The reform movement highlighted in the Evans-Novak report has a champion in the mountains of Western North Carolina. 11th District Republican Congressional Candidate Carl Mumpower is on the leading edge of the struggle to return his Party to the roots and principles that gave birth to the conservative movement in America.
Several weeks ago, Mumpower took the unusual step of suspending his campaign to get the attention of his party on the importance of prompt reform efforts. The candidate pressed a 'Principles First' campaign that asked each county in his District to rededicate themselves to the principles of the Republican Party and to develop their own approach to holding local, state, and national elected Republicans accountable to those principles. Mumpower's effort was rewarded with a unanimous vote of support by the District's Executive Committee and the subsequent signing on of a majority of the District's counties within four days of that meeting. Resistance occurred when three counties in the District subsequently took formal steps to disavow his campaign and separate themselves from the candidate. Mumpower vowed to build on the supportive counties and press on with the hope that others, with time, would come to understand his mission.
"My goal is to have the Republican Party of Western North Carolina lead the way in the conservative reform movement," said Mumpower. "Our Party's principles are very conservative and the American people from all parties look to us to stand fast to the promise found in those principles. Although many people are jumping the Republican ship, I am not one of those. I believe the Republican Party, on the right track, represents the future of America. That's a future worth fighting for, and I am grateful that we are developing traction. Before we are done, the people of Western North Carolina will know the word 'Republican' means something they can count on - starting with a dedication to the conservative values that are the true foundation of America."
