North Carolina
Representative Heath Shuler is proud of his 'Blue Dog' credentials, but The
New American says he may not be matching words with action. The
conservative publication prints a 'Congressional Score Card' that rates representatives
on their support for the U.S. Constitution. In the most recent index
released this week, Shuler scored 10 percent while the average score in
Congress was 31 percent. North Carolina Republican representatives
McHenry, Coble, and Foxx, in contrast, all scored 90 percent on the biannual
index.
Shuler's Republican opponent in the 11th District
race, Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower, says he is not surprised by the
low score. "Heath Shuler talks conservative, but a quick review of
his voting records affirms that he walks liberal," said Mumpower.
"It is apparent that his obligations to his party's power structure are
showing up in his votes. He may call himself a conservative at home, but
his voting record speaks a liberal truth."
Votes used in The New American tally include
federal involvement in mortgage relief, head start, food stamps, warrantless
searches, and economic stimulus efforts that the publication says are not
supported in the Constitution.
Many politicians today no longer view the
Constitution as relevant to modern day American realities. "This
nonsense about the Constitution being a 'living document' is just another
justification for situational ethics and dodging our country's guidebook,"
said Mumpower. "All members of the House and Senate take a
solemn oath to uphold the Constitution, yet very few, by actions, treat that
oath as anything but a ceremony. Mr. Shuler, as measured by his voting
record, is no exception."
