Shuler Mirrors Democrat Paralysis on Energy Policy E-mail

July 21, 2008

Like most of his Democrat colleagues in Congress, 11th District Congressman Heath Shuler is against drilling as a solution to the country's rising gas prices.  Instead, he favors alternative fuels and weaning America of their affection for the energy source used in most privately owned vehicles.  In a recent letter, Shuler highlighted his core energy position, "As our nation addresses this energy crisis we must do so by attacking the root of the problem - our addiction to oil."

The former football player and first term Congressman and his Republican opponent, Carl Mumpower takes a much different approach to the cost of gas and the need for a coherent energy policy.  "I am an 'all of the above' guy when it comes to energy policy," said Mumpower.  "Let's drill now everywhere and anywhere  - we know how to do it responsibly and protect the environment.  I am all for geothermal, wind, hydro, solar and other technologies that, unlike the governmental absurdity found in corn based ethanol, hold real potential.  France offers an excellent model for nuclear energy strategies, and maximizing our use of coal and other fossil fuels with efficient technologies makes good sense.  I like the idea of finding smart voluntary ways to conserve without big government getting in on the act like Jimmy Carter did with his forced 55 speed limit.  Ultimately, it is my bet the sun is going to be our energy future."

"America's energy policy has been kidnapped by environment extremists and paralyzed leaders and bureaucrats," noted Mumpower.   "The phrase 'our addiction to oil' coming from Shuler, Al Gore, and other people who drive big SUV's , live in big houses, and routinely fly in big private planes is hypocritical at best.  Energy is what drives America and these folks are using guilt to shut us up instead of acting on the real issues.  It is not the 'American Way' to surrender when we face obstacles - we have the power to creatively take charge of our energy future."

"Our country has not had a coherent energy policy in decades," said Mumpower.  "Our leaders have been too busy spending our money and creating more rules, entitlements, and government bureaucracy as they have let real problems sit on the shelf.  Although my opponent in the 11th District proudly defines himself as a 'blue dog' Democrat, his voting record reveals a liberal politician who goes along with his party on most issues - including the failure to take real action on our energy crisis."  "I hope the people of Western North Carolina will remember his political double talk when we are paying five dollars a gallon for heating oil this winter."
