GOP Congressional candidate Carl Mumpower is one county away from the magic
number of eight he says are needed to reignite his campaign. The maverick
Republican's 'Principles First' challenge to the 11th District Republican Party
has been formally endorsed by the executive committee of McDowell County. "The
trust and understanding of the Republicans of McDowell County means a lot to me
personally," said Mumpower. "There is a spirit of sincerity in that community
that has stood out since I first began this race in
September."
Mumpower has received criticism for what
some view as an effort to manipulate his party as a distraction from his limited
campaign war chest. "I said from day one that I would not buy a seat in
Congress and that principles would lead the way in my campaign." "The majority
of my opponent's money is coming from out of the District through special
interests, unions, and PACs. I will leave it in the hands of voters as to
whether this seat should be purchased or earned."
The candidate has affirmed that his
campaign is on hold until he receives commitment from at least half of the
fifteen counties in the 11th District. He has received seven official
confirmations since he announced his plan on Monday and needs one more
confirmation to complete a majority of the 11th District's counties.
The candidate's requests center on a
rededication to the Republican Party's principles and independent county action
plans on holding local, state, and national elected officials accountable to
those principles. "I want the people of Western North Carolina to know that the
word 'Republican' stands for something real and something reliable," said Mumpower.
