Representative Heath Shuler, a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, is at work to introduce a bill to provide funding for the national Red Wolf Recovery Program. Although the program is headquartered in a zoo in Tacoma, Washington, the Congressman has researched the need for this type of funding in his congressional district and found opportunity at the Asheville Nature Center.
Shuler's bill proposes federal funding of $1.2 million, with $230,000 for the Nature Center. The red wolf was once found throughout the southeast and is now listed as an endangered species. Loss of habitat and interbreeding with coyotes continue to impede the red wolf's recovery.
11th District GOP Congressional candidate Carl Mumpower has taken a different path on the vulnerability of the red wolf. "It would by my suggestion that the American taxpayer and our grandchildren should be at the top of the current endangered species list," said Mumpower.
"Pork and earmarks of this nature are part of Federal government's community welfare program - or in this case animal welfare program," noted Mumpower. "At a time when our national debt is approaching ten trillion dollars, the Fed and Treasury are printing inflationary money like crazy, and a gallon of gas is over $4, this is a fascinating waste of energy and money."
"History tells us that as a culture declines, leaders become increasingly engrossed with activities that feel good and indulge select special interests," said Mumpower. "At a time when we need to be thinking necessary over nice, our government, with the aid of Mr. Shuler and his counterparts in Congress, is concentrating on nonsense while real problems continue to grow in scope and urgency. " "Nero took a similar approach during the sacking of Rome."
