Political pundits continue to predict hard times for Republicans in the fall. Former Presidential contender Mike Huckabee has been quoted as saying, "The Republican brand is badly damaged and people can't just go out there and ride the elephant down main street because if they do the elephant is going to get shot out from under them." His predictions follow on the heels of repeated defeats for Republican Congressional candidates in May - a pattern which many say heralds a tough November.
11th District Republican Congressional candidate Carl Mumpower agrees that Republican candidates are facing a hard fight, but he is not so quick to write off his party or the future. "The Republican Party has earned its loss of voter loyalty by placing power, party, and other priorities above principle," said Mumpower. "I am in a temporary tustle with some of my District's counties over this very issue - those who are more interested in protecting the party than upholding our principles are on the wrong side of the 'Real Republican' movement that I want the 11th District to champion.
"Republican candidates who have a solid voting record of being careful with other people's money, keeping government in check, and upholding conservative values are more important than ever," said Mumpower. "If folks think America is in trouble now, wait until the Democrats get control of the Presidency and a supermajority in Congress." "Obama's only record of accomplishment in the Senate is to have the most liberal voting record in that body - it is not hard to predict the outcome of a Democrat victory."
"In my view both parties have betrayed America," notes Mumpower. "Our economy, porous borders, foreign entanglements, national debt, and missing in action energy policy all point to leadership dysfunction on Capitol Hill." "Anyone who believes the Democrats will take us to a better place is simply jerking their vehicle out of one ditch into another that is far more dangerous."
Mumpower believes his party is salvageable. "The Republican brand is in trouble because the party leadership abandoned the mission the American people hired them to accomplish," said Mumpower. "Our future is in that mission and our core principles - not hand wringing, hollow party loyalties, and dedication to those who have been leading our elephant, and America, over a cliff."
