Tradition holds that the 11th District
Congressional race hits the fast track following Labor Day. The 11th
District Republican challenger for Heath Shuler's seat is not planning to
take the summer off. Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower has called
for an organized "Information Campaign" that finds WNC changing the
rules for how the country elects our representatives in Congress.
"Most seats in Congress are purchased through money and name
recognition," said Mumpower. "We see the kind of Congress that
comes out of that equation and we all believe that there must be a better
way."
Mumpower's call for an "Information Campaign" centers on three
approaches - candidate debates throughout the District, point-counter point
invitation editorials by the candidates in area newspapers, and opportunities
for both candidates to respond to current issues as a means to better
understanding their positions. "We have a chance in WNC to see our
Congressional seat purchased through sound bites funded by special interests,
or earned through voter choice based on their understanding of candidate
principles, voting record, and positions," noted Mumpower.
"Media outlets, organized groups, and interested citizens should make
their choice early as to which path they believe is best for the District."
"I am appreciative of Heath's prior endorsement of debate as a healthy
means to educating the voter," said Mumpower. "I see value to
the voters through a debate in each County of the District."
"Chambers of Commerce, Civic Clubs, and political organizations are all
in an excellent position to make sure their county has a debate
opportunity. In that both Heath and I have validated the importance of
public debates, I am sure they can count on our enthusiastic participation."
As for the opportunity by both candidates to respond to current events,
Mumpower noted his availability and interest. "The media can count
on my candid and timely response to any questions that will provide readers,
listeners and viewers more information on the contrast between the
candidates." "I'll hand out my cell phone to anyone dealing
with deadlines because I know that those wanting to provide balanced
information need it now. It's through that balanced on-going exposure
to the candidates on real world issues that we can make things different in
WNC."
