Memorial
Day originated as a tribute to those Union soldiers who perished in the Civil
War. It evolved, following WWI, to a dedication to all members of the
military who have died in service to our country. It is a day that has
many communities in America stepping forward with celebrations to remember
those who have served and passed before us.
As we pause to say thank you, it may be helpful to remember just what it was
that these men and women were seeking to preserve. Their sacrifice
certainly was not about an America that is quickly becoming a country of self
and special interests. Very few of these men and women would have
described a wish for a country increasingly devoted to socialism and the
policies of big government over big people. One cannot imagine that they
would have stepped into harm's way with a vision of our porous borders, rampant
drug abuse, and paralyzed leadership.
Those we seek to honor rest quietly beneath the soil on foreign lands and here
at home. Their voice is silent, but their message remains - we have
something precious to preserve. The time of America's service as a beacon
of hope and possibility in a dangerous world is not over.
Today, as we seek to remember, let us also embrace our responsibility to carry
the fight for those who no longer can. America's past is founded in an
equation of success rarely duplicated in history. It is in three words -
liberty, opportunity, and responsibility - that we also find our future.
Today, we say thank you best by stepping up and fighting to keep the American
Dream alive for those who come later. Therein lies our truest memorial.
