Farm Bill More About Favor Than Food |

President Bush vetoed the
$290 billion 2008 farm bill today, citing concerns with bloat, special interest
subsidies, and tax breaks for Kentucky race horse owners among others.
Congressman Heath Shuler voted for the bill - a move that his Republican
opponent in the 11th District race, Carl Mumpower, indicates as a glimpse into
the "real Heath Shuler". "Our representative talks
about paying as you go, mountain values, and looking out for taxpayers - this
vote, like many, is more about finding favor with special interests than watch
dogging for the American people," said Mumpower.
"The
President is right to veto this bill even though they have enough votes to
override him", said Mumpower. "It's packed with pork for
Republicans and Democrats alike - most of which has nothing to do with
preserving our farms or agriculture." "Robbing from one guy's
pocket to pad another guy's pocket is closet socialism. There were 318
"yes" votes for this exercise in legislative absurdity. That
percentage highlights Republican leadership that is doing everything but
supporting our party's principles and a local Congressman's true credentials as
a liberal Democrat. A prostitute may take Sunday off, but that doesn't
make her a choir director anymore than having a few conservative positions
makes a politician a real conservative."

Principle before party,
politics or popularity - always.
