~From the desk of the Candidate~
Press Release

April 16, 2008
Capitol Hill action
on non-action this week took the average WNC taxpayers one-step closer to a
$1,600 annual federal tax increase. Republican
efforts to introduce the Tax Increase
Prevention Act stopping the expiration of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts failed
by a 220 to 196 vote. Five “Blue Dog”
Democrats supported the conservative initiative, while 11th District
Congressional Representative Heath Shuler voted with the Democrat majority.
11th
District Republican Congressional Candidate Carl Mumpower noted the Shuler vote
as the continuation of a theme, “Since his election, 80% of Mr. Shuler’s votes have
supported a liberal agenda.” “Refusing
to make the tax cuts permanent is an underhanded path to major increases in our
WNC tax bills,” said Mumpower. “The Dems
and Mr. Shuler are counting on this backdoor tax increase being overlooked by
folks who do not want government reaching deeper into their pockets.”
“Mr. Shuler validates
his support for tax increases by taking a principled position I admire – that government
should pay its way as it goes,” said Mumpower.
“That would be fine if he backed his words with actions resisting Federal
waste, but Shuler consistently supports earmarks and pork on Capitol Hill.” “There is no difference in someone breaking
into a house and stealing $1,600 and the way our liberal Congress is setting up
this backdoor tax increase. This is
nonsense politics as practiced by both parties – this time it is the Democrats
and their nonsense is going to be very expensive to working men and women in
WNC.” 82
